Who will decide on my application?

The LAEF has a joint steering committee (the Committee) who approves applications based on the eligibility criteria and the funding amounts set by the Community Social Services Bargaining Association (CSSBA) and the Community Social Services Employers Association (CSSEA). If your application is turned down, you have the right to appeal.

How long will it take to hear from you?

The Committee will meet to review and approve applications. You will be advised of the next meeting date after your application has been received.

If you need a response by a specific time, please send a separate email to [email protected] to flag this for the Fund Administrator and include the reasons why.

What if I’ve already started or finished my training?

Training that starts any time during the submission period will be considered. All receipts must be submitted once approved.

Can I apply more than once?

If you have already received funding, you may only apply again for funding up to the maximum amount allowed.

Can I apply for retraining funds if I am receiving Employment Insurance (EI), LTD or other financial support?

Yes. However, it may impact your claim. EI, STIIP, or LTD may reduce your payments by the amount of retraining funds you receive. Please contact your local EI office or benefit provider for further details.

There is a long waitlist for my retraining. Can I apply for funding now?

The submission period for the Labour Education Adjustment Fund is now closed. Please review the eligibility dates and guidelines when it reopens for more information.

I trained in another country and need to upgrade my certification or training or need to improve my English language skills. Can I apply for funding?

Yes.

My job is changing and I need to upgrade to remain employable. Can the LAEF help?

Yes.

What are my options if you do not approve my application?

You have the right to appeal a decision of the steering committee.

Will the fund cover expenses for drivers’ lessons?

The LAEF does not generally provide funding for driving lessons. Funding for drivers’ training will only be considered for members impacted by contracting out or layoffs or when a license is a new requirement for a current position.

Are casual employees able to apply?

Yes.

What costs are covered?

The LAEF can cover tuition, workshop fees, books, required supplies or equipment. The fund cannot cover paid leave from work in ordinary circumstances. However, the steering committee will consider and can approve additional reasonable costs.

The training I need isn’t offered at a BC public educational institution. Can I still apply?

Yes. Explain why you were not able to obtain the training through a public institution in your application.
